The LocoBed

LocoBed is an adjustable locomotive and car cradle - also called a maintenance stand. In H0 scale these products are readily available, but for the bigger scales they are quite hard to find - if they can be found at all. I really wanted a stand you can rotate to any angle, making the model accessible from all sides without picking it up again and again. Of course you can wait until a manufacturer puts one on the market or... get creative yourself.

Like the LocoBox the LocoBed consists of 12 mm laser cut plywood. The parts fit precisely together. You can have the parts cut yourself, e.g. at Snijlab in Rotterdam. The files are set up for a single sheet of 600 x 600 x 12 mm plywood. Download the files and create you order at Snijlab or your local cutting service. Things to add yourself: woodglue (PVAC) and foamrubber (10 - 20 mm thick).

After glueing all the bits together, you should have two parts in front of you: the base and the bed. The bed revolves in the base freely, so don't put any glue here. The friction holds the bed in any position. You can turn it from one side all the way to the other, over a 90 degree angle.

If you need a longer or taller version, you can adjust the files with Adobe Illustrator or a similar piece of software. You are free to adopt the design for non-commercial use, providing you keep LOCOBED and my name on it.

The LocoBed is ideal for mantaining and building rolling stock. Have fun with it!
